2010 Recipient:
Consuelo Cervantes Buenk
Consuelo Cervantes Buenk has been awarded the Ana Alvarez Holmberg Scholarship for 2010.
The scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated commitment to community service, personal advancement and continuous learning, and exhibits high personal standards and passion for life.
As a busy professional and mother, Consuelo knows the importance of professional development and is pursuing her Masters degree. Consuelo is full of energy and commitment to learning both formally and through reading and observing various cultures.
Consuelo volunteers her time and energy as a facilitator for LifeSkills sessions with Jeremiah, an organization that provides subsidized housing for single mothers. In exchange mothers need to stay in school, work part-time and attend the sessions. In addition to her work with LifeSkills, she mentors a 7th grade student and volunteers with Cub Scouts and the Adventures in Art program for her son’s school.
“Vivacious, empathetic, optimistic, intelligent.” Those are the words that Loras Holmberg, the husband of Ana Alvarez-Holmberg, uses to describe Consuelo. “If Ana were here, she and Consuelo certainly would be good friends.”
Consuelo is currently enrolled in the University of St. Thomas Human Resource and Change Leadership program. Consuelo was sponsored by Miriam Williams, a current member of our ASTD-TCC chapter.
We were fortunate to have very talented and accomplished scholarship applicants that represented Ana’s spirit and zest for life. Thank you to all of our applicants and sponsors for making this a great year for our scholarship.
Special thanks to the Scholarship evaluation and coordination committee for their work on choosing our recipient: Loras Holmberg, Kim Johnson, Carolyn Scott, David Yutesler, Erin O’Hara and Rita Maehling. |
